Hailea (she/her/they/them) is a queer, white settler who completed her course work in the Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Simon Fraser University. They were a practicum student counsellor at the SFU Surrey Community Counselling Clinic, Health Initiative for Men, and QMUNITY. Currently, they are completing their thesis requirements while working in private practice as a counsellor.
She was born and grew up in Vancouver and Maple Ridge located on the unceded and traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Katzie, and Kwantlen peoples. Hailea has been working in helping professions since she was in high school where she was a co-facilitator of a girl’s support group for at risk teens. After that experience, she became dedicated to becoming a counsellor. They began their education in the Associate of Arts in Psychology program in 2011; later they completed the Bachelor of Arts, Honours, in Applied Psychology program at Douglas College with a specialization in Pre-Counselling. While completing those degrees, they worked with children, youth, and adults in various paid and volunteer positions both locally and abroad (location in brackets) such as: peer tutor, mental health care worker, peer support worker, and street youth outreach worker (Kitwe, Zambia). Since completing their Bachelor’s degree, relevant positions she has held are community living counsellor, psychology lab technician, union shop steward, and behavioural specialist.
Hailea has had training and/or has studied in the areas of Exposure and Response Prevention, Anxiety Intervention Support, Person Centred Therapy, Interpersonal Process Theory, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Gottman Couples Therapy (Level 1), Narrative Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy. She has also completed training in mental health first aid and intercultural communication. Most recently, she is a student in the Gottman Institute’s professional training (Level 2) on couple’s therapy and the Buehler Institute’s Foundations of Sex Therapy Program.
Hailea strongly believes in the power of affirmative, holistic counselling. She strives to support her clients through an intersectional lens and believes that each person has a unique perspective and context that deserves to be validated and respected. In addition, she is sex-positive and is comfortable working with individuals who identify as belonging to the consensually non-monogamous as well as the kink community. In their spare time, Hailea enjoys spending time with her loved ones, attending live events, being in nature, meditating, doing yoga, swimming, and painting.
Hailea is excited to have the opportunity to provide affirmative counselling services to fellow members of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community.
